06/12/2016

The PLMJ Foundation has organised the conference “Cultural Heritage: Entrepreneurship and Itinerancies” as part of the “PLMJ Art Sessions” cycle. The event will take place on 13 December at the Árpád Szenes-Vieira Foundation. This is the second annual meeting dedicated to topics with relevance and impact on various aspects of the cultural landscape to be organised by the PLMJ Foundation. It follows the first pioneering conference of 2015 on "Corporate Art Collections".

“Cultural Heritage: Entrepreneurship and Itinerancies” will bring together a number of illustrious speakers to address the issues surrounding cultural heritage. They will debate questions relating to history, urban rehabilitation, economic investment, the legal rules on movable and immovable cultural assets, world heritage and its adversities and museology, among others.

The speakers at this event will be: the President of the Lisbon Municipal Council, Fernando Medina, Emílio Rui Vilar, Non-executive Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, António Gomes de Pinho, President of the Arpad-Szènes Vieira da Silva Foundation, Ana Martinho, President of the Advisory Board of the UNESCO National Commission, António Filipe Pimentel, Director of the National Museum of Ancient Arte, João Carlos dos Santos – Subdirector-General of the Directorate-General of Cultural Heritage, Maria João Figueiroa Rego, historian, Vitor Lúcio, President of the Board of Directors of HCI – Construções, S.A., and Rui Luís Furtado Marques, Manager of HCI – Construções, S.A.

The conference will be opened by PLMJ managing partner Luís Pais Antunes and feature Manuel Lopes Rocha, Director of the PLMJ Foundation and head partner of PLMJ Intellectual Property, Diogo Duarte Campos, a partner from PLMJ Public and Manuel da Silva Gomes, a senior associate from PLMJ Environment.

This event will also feature the launch of the book “Arte e Direito” (Art and Law), the 10th volume of the PLMJ Legal Collection, in partnership with the publisher Almedina. This is a pioneering book that brings together texts by 10 PLMJ lawyers from a range of practice areas – tax, public law, intellectual property, arbitration and insurance. It is an exercise in bringing the work of art face-to-face with the science of the law. It also includes a chapter on cultural heritage and raises various issues of interest to lawyers and to all those involved in the world of art.

The aim of the conference is to reflect on the problems of heritage as a dynamic cultural practice that cuts across a range of sectors – economic, social, legal and cultural. It is also intended to be a point where municipal power, cultural agents and lawyers can meet for an open dialogue about cultural heritage from their diverse perspectives. These are the objectives it is hoped this initiative of the PLMJ Foundation will achieved.

The PLMJ Foundation

The PLMJ Foundation was set up by the law firm under the motto “A law firm as a place for culture” and it is now one of Portugal’s leading cultural institutions. The PLMJ Foundation supports art from Portugal and from Portuguese-speaking countries and it has developed a collection representing contemporary production. It organises exhibitions, publishing and educational projects, debates and interaction with other cultural agents. It is also involved in other initiatives to spread and promote culture. The collection of the PLMJ Foundation is made up of paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and video. The collection includes not only established artists, but also young, emerging ones. With this approach, the PLMJ Foundation fosters artistic creation in Portugal and internationally. This focus on new values springs from the innovating spirit of the PLMJ Foundation and it is a pioneering gesture in the world of art collection in Portugal.
