TAX LAW

PLMJ’s Tax Practice is one of the largest specialist teams working in the area of tax law in Portugal. These lawyers have the technical qualifications, training and academic and professional connections to respond to the full-range of issues raised by their clients.

The tax practice is organised into two broad areas of specialisation: consulting and litigation. In each of these areas there are lawyers who specialise by client sector (e.g. finance, tourism, public sector, individuals) or by work type (e.g. M&A, VAT, international taxation, wealth planning, tax crimes).

This practice is recognised as a boutique of unrivalled quality in the area of tax law. The lawyers of the tax practice also provide ongoing support for the day-today tax management of their clients’ businesses.

The tax practice team presents the approaches and tax solutions that are most appropriate under the applicable legislation. This helps our clients to make the most of their opportunities and to face the difficulties that arise from the rules governing tax practices and management in their business activity.

The growing complexity of legislation and new, ever more demanding procedures have made it difficult for companies, especially foreign ones, to carry on their activities without the benefit of advice from specialised professionals. PLMJ’s is Tax Practice is in the perfect position to provide the best advice on taxation frameworks for planned operations in light of the applicable legislation

Clients of this practice area act in the following business segments:

  • Banking and insurance;
  • Capital markets and venture capital;
  • Pharmacology, biotechnology and cosmetics;
  • Real estate;
  • Tourism and hotels;
  • Automobiles;
  • Sport;
  • Telecommunications;
  • Press and media.

Tax practice area lawyers are responsible for the daily tax management of their clients. The increasing complexity of the legislation and the progressively demanding new procedures are making it difficult for companies, and particularly foreign companies, to act without the advice of specialised professionals. The tax practice area seeks out the most fitting tax framework for each proposed transaction, finding the best solution based on tax legislation provisions, always in accordance with the highest of professional ethics. Clients are helped to make the most of opportunities and to face the legislative obstacles as well as those resulting from their business’s management and tax practice.

We often work in conjunction with lawyers from other PLMJ practice areas, especially in restructuring or merger and acquisition transactions, project finance or more specific and complex financial transactions, thereby providing full service to clients.

Although the tax practice area is run from Lisbon and the majority of our lawyers are based there, there are also tax lawyers in the Oporto and Algarve offices. The tax practice area also works closely with its Portuguese and international Joint-Venture offices, in particular those in Portuguese language countries (CPLC).
