PLMJ leads the Portuguese market as a full-service law firm, and has the best results in the country in the Chambers Europe 2016 rankings

28/04/2016

PLMJ has maintained its position as market leader in Portugal, with the best results in the country in the Chambers and Partners Europe 2016 rankings. PLMJ is ranked in 20 of the 21 areas analysed by Chambers and Partners and has the best across-the-board results of any Portuguese law firm, with 10 practice areas recommended in Band 1, nine in Band 2 and one in Band 3. The major news this year is the rise of PLMJ’s Oporto from Band 2 to Band 1, which demonstrates the growing importance of this office in the industrial and commercial setting of the northern region of Portugal.

PLMJ has achieved recommendations in Band 1 for Insurance, Competition, Corporate M&A, Dispute Resolution, Employment, Intellectual Property, Real Estate, Restructuring & Insolvency, TMT and Oporto.

In Band 2, Banking & Finance, Energy & Natural Resources (domestic market), Energy & Natural Resources (international), Planning, Private Equity, Projects, Public Law, Tax and Transportation: Aviation. For Capital Markets, PLMJ is recommended in Band 3.

As the most prestigious international legal directory, Chambers evaluates the work of European law firms. In the annual analysis of work done in the market, it highlights the dominant role that PLMJ plays in the Portuguese legal landscape as a full-service, international firm.

PLMJ also ranks strongly in the individual recommendations, with 51 recommendations for 39 PLMJ lawyers. Among the specialists who are recognised, PLMJ founding partner and head of PLMJ Arbitration José Miguel Júdice features as Star Individual. He is joined by PLMJ founding partner Luís Sáragga Leal as Senior Statesmen, together with Pedro Sáragga Leal, a partner in PLMJ Real Estate and Construction, who is newly recommended as a Senior Statesman. Abel Mesquita maintains his recommendation as Eminent Practitioner for employment and labour. These recommendations are the highest given by Chambers.

In the words of PLMJ managing partner Luís Pais Antunes, “These recommendations represent well-deserved public and independent recognition of the work we have done. They also recognise our capacity to provide high quality advice in different jurisdictions, sectors and practice areas. Once again, they reflect the market’s absolute trust in the consistent work done by PLMJ and by its lawyers. They also provide an incentive for us to maintain our ambition and continue the work, which we want to be characterised by constant attention to the needs of our clients, and by excellence, rigour and innovation.”

“PLMJ continues to be the firm chosen by major public and private companies, both Portuguese and international, to defend their interests and support their expansion and growth. PLMJ is also the firm of choice for cross-border operations involving Angola, Mozambique, China and Switzerland, among others, in the areas of M&A, private equity, arbitration and banking & finance”, Luís Pais Antunes emphasises.

This evaluation by Chambers also reflects a significant increase PLMJ’s presence and the consolidation of the partnerships established through PLMJ International Legal Network that exist in Portuguese-speaking countries and other jurisdictions. All the recommendations highlight PLMJ’s experience in acting for international clients in different countries, and the lawyers responsible for each of these partnerships and areas of specialisation.

The directory Chambers Europe focuses on excellence and specialisation in legal services in a range of areas. The criteria it uses are client and market opinions, and the track record of deals and matters of each team in each area of specialisation.
