Impact investing was born from the need to find innovative solutions to the social and environmental challenges of our time.

Impact investing involves the investment of capital in activities, organisations or funds to achieve both a financial return and a return of value to society.

Impact investing has come about because of the need to respond to two challenges. First, to find innovative solutions to the social and environmental challenges of our time. Second, to respond to the changing preferences of the millennial generation for sustainable companies with a sense of purpose. This generation today represents 35% of the labour market and will be the largest holder of wealth in the coming decades.

To activate this new strategic axis, PLMJ began a partnership with MAZE, an impact investing firm founded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2013 that supports three key projects:

  • MAZE Impact: Legal support from the constitution of MAZE Impact, the former Laboratory of Social Investment of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
  • Mustard Seed MAZE: Support in setting up the first social entrepreneurship company and fund in Portugal
  • Maze X: Participation as a corporate partner of Maze-X – a social impact accelerator – along with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Edmond de Rothschild Foundation

We believe that impact investing is the greatest opportunity of our times, because it allows us to respond to the major environmental and social challenges of our society while we build an innovative organisation – one with a positive impact that is adapted to the market forces of the future.
