Iberian Lawyer analyses growth in market for medical cannabis

Eduardo Nogueira Pinto, the partner who heads PLMJ Healthcare, Life Sciences & Pharmaceuticals, was interviewed recently by Iberian Lawyer about the growth in the market for medical cannabis and cannabinoids.

The regulations on the use of cannabis-based medicines preparations and substances, published in Diário da República on 15 January 2019, will allow doctors in Portugal to prescribe cannabis derivatives for medical purposes.

"It is difficult to estimate with certainty the potential size of this market (...); some numbers signal that the medical cannabis market was worth USD 17 bn in 2016, with estimates that it will grow to over USD 50 bn by 2020 – these are mere projections, but it is a fast-growing market", says Eduardo Nogueira Pinto.

He added that clients looking to enter this highly regulated market "will need access to specialised, in-depth expertise".
