PLMJ expands internationalisation with the creation of a Scandinavian Desk

20/01/2015

A specialised, multidisciplinary team focused on providing legal support for investment in Scandinavian countries, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries.

PLMJ has recently launched its Scandinavian Desk, a multidisciplinary team of specialist lawyers focused on supporting clients from Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway and Sweden), in Portugal and in Portuguese-speaking countries and clients interested in doing business in the Scandinavian markets. The team is coordinated by Peter Morawetz, a Swedish lawyer with more than 30 years’ experience in advising Scandinavian companies. Peter Morawetz was a partner in one of Sweden’s leading law firms, Vinge, and joined PLMJ as a consultant at the beginning of the year.

To begin with, the Scandinavian Desk will work in coordination with PLMJ’s German Desk. This team has vast experience in providing legal support to clients from German-speaking countries in Portugal and Portuguese companies in Germany, Austria and the Countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and is led by partner Vasco Ataíde Marques.

According to Vasco Ataíde Marques “Our aim with the new PLMJ Desk is to provide more effective support to investors from Scandinavia when they decide to invest in Portugal or in Portuguese-speaking countries where PLMJ International Legal Network is present. This support is based on extensive knowledge of the markets in question and the needs of companies and private clients. This Desk also specialises in assisting Portuguese clients who want to invest in the markets of northern Europe with the benefit of the same skills and know-how of those markets.”

The Scandinavian countries have the strongest and most stable economies in Europe, which is a consequence of the “Nordic Modulo” they have implemented. They are also home to some of the largest multinationals in the areas of technology, furniture and food products. PLMJ has already done work over recent years with some of these companies and they have demonstrated a growing interest in investing in Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries, and Scandinavians are increasingly seeking to obtain tax residence in Portugal. These are some of the reasons that led us to setting up this Desk, with it is team of lawyers that bring together language skills, cultural awareness and consolidated knowledge of the markets.

In creating a Desk for Scandinavia PLMJ has taken another important step in its strategy of internationalisation. The new Desk joins those already operating in PLMJ that specialise in specific source markets for investors and include German-speaking countries, France, Italy and Switzerland.

Vasco Ataíde Marques also explains that “This model is a strategic step by PLMJ and is a clear illustration of the firm’s position ahead of the competition. It guarantees high quality legal services to clients while also offering knowledge of the specific characteristics of each of these markets. In addition, it has the support of local firms that belong to PLMJ International Legal Network”.

This team provides a multidisciplinary, full-service with the support of more than 250 PLMJ lawyers at its offices in Lisbon, Oporto and Faro, and in PLMJ International Legal Network.
