About Paula

Paula is an of counsel working in the Intellectual Property practice. With 35 years’ experience, she is one of the most renowned lawyers in Portugal the areas of intellectual property and life sciences. She is also a frequent contributor to conferences, articles and books.

In recent years, Paula has focused on issues relating to medically assisted reproduction and clinical research, among others. In matters of intellectual property, her main focus is litigation, but she also drafts and analyses contracts, and advises on copyright, trademarks and design, software compliance and cybercrime.

Her extensive experience is reflected in the fact that she is a senior researcher at the Institute of Bioethics of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Until recently, she was also a member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies of the European Commission (EGE) and was its vice-president.

Paula is a member of the IBC - International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO, the Ethics Committee of the Champalimaud Foundation and the Council of Ethics of Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central. She is also a member of the Scientific Council of the International Society of Bioethics.
