About José Miguel

José Miguel is one of PLMJ’s founding partners and a prominent name in Portuguese and international commercial arbitration. He is Portugal’s most experienced international arbitrator, having acted in more than 50 arbitrations (33 of them as president and 3 as sole arbitrator). These arbitrations have had their seats in Brazil, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Spain, Angola, France, the Netherlands and Portugal, and they have been held in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, many of them bilingual.

José Miguel is a member of many rosters of arbitrators. These include the ICSID (World Bank), the PCA (Permanent Court of Arbitration) and various arbitration centres in Brazil (9), Portugal, Spain, Angola, Mozambique, BVI and South Korea.

He has been president of the Arbitration Centre of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a member of the High Council of the Judiciary, president of the Portuguese Bar Association and chair of its Human Rights Committee, a member of the ICC Court of Arbitration, a member of the board of the Portuguese Arbitration Association and of the board of Club Español de Arbitraje.

José Miguel is a guest lecturer at the Universidade Nova Faculty of Economics (course in business law in the Lisbon MBA) and at the Faculty of Law (course in international commercial arbitration).

He has been a speaker in conferences on arbitration, public law and commercial law issues in the USA, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe, and he has also published books and articles in these same regions.
