PLMJ lawyers name Rising Stars by the prestigious Expert Guides collection

Four PLMJ lawyers have been recognised in the second edition of the Expert Guides’ Rising Stars guide, which, every year, identifies promising young international lawyers from countries around the world. The lawyers are Sara Estima Martins, a partner from PLMJ EU and Competition, Filipa Cansado Carvalho, a senior associate from PLMJ Arbitration, Rodrigo Formigal, a senior associate from PLMJ Banking and Finance and Filipe Abreu, a senior associate from PLMJ Tax.

Sara Estima Martins, 36, has been involved in numerous deals and cases before the Competition Authority and Portuguese courts. She has also represented clients before the European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union. Among these cases, she represented European companies and associations from the processed fruit and vegetable sector in actions to annul regulations and decisions of the European Commission in relation to the CAP. She also represented a group of former employees of Air Atlantis in a claim based on non-contractual liability against the Portuguese State for violation of EU law.

Filipa Cansado Carvalho, 39, is a specialist in international arbitration who also acts as an arbitrator. Over recent years, she has represented many companies in commercial disputes. She has also represented companies and foreign states in actions against other foreign states, particularly involving corporate, construction and concession disputes of many different types.

Rodrigo Formigal, 36, has, over the last few years, handled a range of financing and debt restructuring operations, as well as operations involving issue and placement of debt instruments including commercial paper, bonds and credit securitisation. He has also worked on the sale of Barclays’ business in Portugal and a number of cases related to the BES resolution.

Filipe Abreu, 33, joined PLMJ in 2015. Before that he worked as an adviser to the Secretary Of State for Tax Affairs in the 19th Constitutional Government and as a member of the IRS (personal income tax) Reform Commission. He focuses on tax consultancy work and was part of the team that advised on the sale of Barclays’ operation in Portugal.
