09/09/2014

The new of counsel in PLMJ’s financial and corporate litigation area is a former judge of the Lisbon civil courts and a university professor with a vast collection of published works.

PLMJ has strengthened its team with the arrival of Professor Pedro Caetano Nunes, who for 14 years and until very recently was a judge in one of the Lisbon civil courts. Pedro Caetano Nunes is also a professor and chair of corporate law at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

The new of counsel brings greater strength to PLMJ’s litigation team, in particular, in the area of financial and corporate litigation, which has grown significantly over recent years. PLMJ’s litigation team is ranked in tier 1 by Chambers and all the other leading international directories. The team boasts 9 partners among a total of more than 50 lawyers working in Lisbon, Oporto and Faro and is Portugal’s largest team dedicated exclusively to litigation.

This arrival also boosts the leading position of PLMJ Arbitration, headed by PLMJ founding partner, José Miguel Júdice, which is among the best 100 arbitration teams in the world according to Global Arbitration Review. This is because Pedro Caetano Nunes can act as an arbitrator and of counsel in arbitration cases involving corporate law issues such as shareholder agreements.

The arrival of Professor Pedro Caetano Nunes also reflects PLMJ’s focus on providing preventive legal advice to companies and managers on corporate governance, where the new of counsel’s experience and know-how will be a valuable asset.

Nuno Líbano Monteiro, the head of PLMJ’s litigation practice, explained that “we see this hiring as a great advantage for the firm, particularly in the area of corporate and financial litigation, which will benefit from his vast know-how. He will undoubtedly add value for clients and contribute to enriching the training of our younger lawyers”.

Pedro Caetano Nunes’ arrival marks yet another step in the consolidation of PLMJ’s strategy which, over the firm’s 45-year history, has led to the creation of a team that is unparalleled in the market. PLMJ has achieved this position through a culture of organic growth completed by a policy of lateral hirings of highly specialised leading lawyers.

Besides his career as a judge, Pedro Caetano Nunes was a lecturer at the Centre for Judicial Studies. He has also published a vast collection of works on private law including corporate governance and arbitration and contributes regularly to legal publications and conferences and seminars.
