A Global Vision

Switzerland occupies the 23rd place in the international economic ranking. It is one of the founding countries of the European Free Trade Association and a party to the Schengen Agreement. Although it is not part of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area, the agreements it has made with the EU have extended the geographical application of a relevant part of EU legislation on free movement of capital to Switzerland.

It is universally recognised as one of the main world financial centres, specialising in the management of assets and fortunes with banking secrecy that is traditionally strong. The biggest international companies have favoured Switzerland to set up their centres of world operations. Switzerland is also home to the worldwide headquarters of the leading non-governmental organisations and most of the international sports federations.

The combination of these factors makes Switzerland a unique international platform for business because of its combination of private clients, financial institutions multinationals and sporting bodies, based in the main in the Cantons of Geneva and Zürich.

Portugal is one of the main sources of and destinations for trade with Switzerland and, for Portugal, Switzerland is historically a safe financial centre. It is also worth noting the importance the local Portuguese community has in Swiss society and in the country's economy.
