The foundation stone of the new Heineken factory in Mozambique was laid on 4 December.
The legal work to prepare for this important step involved analysing complex legal issues in several jurisdictions and it was handled by a large multidisciplinary, cross-border team of lawyers from the PLMJ Mozambique Desk and from the law firm TTA Advogados, PLMJ Network’s local partner.
The team was led in Portugal by PLMJ partner, Nuno Morais Sarmento, and he was assisted by PLMJ managing associate, Marta Pedro, and by Tomás Timbane, the founding partner of TTA Advogados. Tomás Timbane was also responsible for executive coordination of the matter in Mozambique and he was assisted by the team of lawyers at TTA in Maputo. Together, these lawyers dealt with all aspects of this challenging project. The legal support they provided covered the areas of international investment, projects, real estate and construction, employment and labour, tax, public and administrative law, commercial law and management of distribution contracts, among others.
The Heineken factory should be completed and operational by the summer of 2019. According to Tomás Timbane, "At a difficult time for the country’s economy, this international investment project is an important highlight for Mozambique. TTA, which is a member of PLMJ’s international network of firms, is particular proud to be involved in this great initiative, which will undoubtedly benefit the Mozambican economy."
