PLMJ leads the market Portugal as the only law firm in the country to be recommended in Bands 1 and 2 in all 20 practice areas analysed by Chambers and Partners – Europe. Every year, this prestigious international directory evaluates the work done by Europe’s leading law firms and, in making these recommendations, Chambers highlights PLMJ’s dominant role in the Portuguese legal profession as in international, full-service firm.
PLMJ has achieved recommendations in Band 1 for insurance, a category now independent from banking & finance; for competition, corporate M&A, dispute resolution, employment, energy & natural resources, intellectual property, real estate, restructuring & insolvency and TMT. Recommended in Band 2 are banking & finance, energy & natural resources (international), the Oporto office, planning, private equity, projects, public law, tax and transportation: aviation.
PLMJ also stands out for its individual recommendations, achieving 54 recommendations awarded to 41 PLMJ lawyers. This number has been rising over recent years and this year sees 3 more recommendations than last year. Among the specialists recognised by Chambers are PLMJ founding partner and head of the arbitration practice José Miguel Júdice, who is named Star Individual, and founding partner PLMJ Luís Sáragga Leal, who is named Senior Statesmen. This year also sees the introduction of the new category of Eminent Practitioner, and partner Abel Mesquita achieves this status in Employment. These are the highest levels of recommendation awarded by Chambers.
All these recommendations highlight PLMJ’s experience in providing legal support to international clients from a range of countries, as well as the lawyers responsible for each of our international partnerships and areas of specialisation. PLMJ’s achievements follow the firm being named Portuguese “Law Firm of the Year” at the Chambers Europe Awards 2014.
In the words of PLMJ managing partner Manuel Santos Vitor, “PLMJ’s recommendations in Bands 1 and 2 once again reveal the market’s absolute trust in the consistent work done by PLMJ and its lawyers. The high number of deals handled by PLMJ has contributed to this recognition from Chambers as PLMJ continues to be the firm chosen by major public and private, both Portuguese and international, to defend their interests and support them in their growth and expansion processes. The cross-border deals we have handled, particularly in Angola, Mozambique, China and Switzerland, and hundreds of litigation cases and major international arbitrations, have also contributed to the firm’s achievement”.
Chambers Europe identifies excellence and specialisation in the provision of legal services in the various legal areas on the basis of the opinion of clients and the market, as well as the track record of work done by the teams in each area of specialisation.
