Agriculture is one of the most rapidly evolving sectors today. The issue of food security and the need to look at it from a perspective of future sustainability, while meeting the needs of the present, has accelerated the sophistication of a sector that is key to the quality of human life, now and in the future.

Due to its geographical and climatic characteristics, and its know-how , Portugal stands out in Europe as a destination for investment in this sector. It has gained global recognition through the success stories of agricultural projects developed by international and Portuguese investors. Today, these projects export both products and highly specialised knowledge and technology.

Globally, but also locally, in no sector is the issue of sustainability more critical. And the projects have increasingly reflected this urgency to reconcile the needs of the present with the guarantee that we will take care of future generations.

Agribusiness and sustainability are inextricably linked. And it is from this inescapable link that innovation is born: when we talk about managing scarce resources such as water, precision farming, value chains and food safety.

At PLMJ, we are passionate about these projects and have built a dedicated and highly specialised team.

We advise on a wide and varied range of issues that are critical to our clients' agricultural projects:

  • Licensing of infrastructure for the use of water resources and other methods of water resource extraction
  • Licensing of renewable energy production facilities
  • Procedures to contract (often foreign) labour to meet seasonal peaks in demand
  • Analysis of issues of preemption rights in the acquisition of rural property under the two pieces of legislation that apply (the Civil Code and the Law on the National Agricultural Reserve),
  • Analysis of the applicable territorial instruments and interaction with the various administrative bodies involved in the sector (Ministry of Agriculture, Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, Portuguese Environment Agency, Institute for Nature Conservation and Forestry, irrigators' associations, among others).
