Martim is a partner in the EU and Competition Law practice. He has over 15 years' experience advising on cartel and abuse of dominance proceedings, merger control and compliance programmes. He has particular expertise in the TMT, financial services, retail and consumer goods, and pharmaceutical sectors.
Before joining PLMJ, Martim was a legal director at the UK's Competition and Markets Authority. He also worked at two leading international law firms: Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in Brussels and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London. In addition, he spent six months on secondment to Google's competition team. Martim draws on his experience in Brussels and London to advise clients on complex competition law matters.
Recent matters have included defending multinational companies in competition-related class actions in Portugal. Martim also has significant merger control experience, including representing companies in Phase II proceedings before the Portuguese Competition Authority. In addition, he has acted in a number of high-profile antitrust enforcement cases before both the Portuguese Competition Authority and the Competition Court.
Martim holds a law degree from NOVA School of Law and LL.M. degrees from the College of Europe (Bruges) and the University of Chicago. He is bilingual in Portuguese and English, fluent in French, and has a working knowledge of Spanish and Italian.
