Tiago Duarte reappointed as ICSID arbitrator

Tiago Duarte, a senior counsel at PLMJ and a lecturer at Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), has been appointed by the Portuguese government to the panel of arbitrators at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), which is part of the World Bank Group.

The ICSID is the world's foremost international arbitration centre for disputes between investors and sovereign states. Under the terms of the Washington Convention, which established the ICSID, each state may appoint up to four individuals to this list. Tiago was previously appointed for one term and has now been reappointed for a further six years.

He has experience in ICSID arbitration as a lecturer, teaching this subject on the LLM programme at UCP; as a researcher; and as a lawyer and legal expert, having published several works on the subject. According to Article 14 of the Washington Convention, "persons designated to serve on the panel shall be persons of high moral character and recognised competence in the fields of law, commerce, industry or finance who may be relied upon to exercise independent judgement".
